Pattison Park Summer Programs

Pattison State Park just a 15 minute drive south of Superior on State Hwy. 35, offers a variety of FREE family-oriented, fun educational programs during the summer months. There is no cost to attend the activities, however, vehicle admission stickers are required (daily and annual resident/non-resident stickers are available). Evening programs start at 7:00 p.m., late night programs begin at dusk and afternoon programs start at 1:00 p.m. (All programs are in the evening unless otherwise stated). Participants are encouraged to call ahead to confirm programs (715-399-3111)

June:

6-7 Martin Pattison and Camp Pattison: Travel back in time to meet the man behind the park, the man who saved the Big Manitou Falls from being destroyed. Then experience the life and success of the 7 years of the CCC Camp Pattison that built Pattison State Park for our appreciation and safety. [followed by an Intermediate No-Lights Night Hike after dark]

6-8 A Howling Success: Plunge into the world of wolves through a movie on the re-introduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park. Dive into the impact of wolves in Wisconsin.

6-9 Barking up the Right Tree: Be a detective and track down the right identification of some of the trees of Pattison State Park. Your tools will consist of two simple tree identification keys. Be prepared to take a hike! You become the specialist!

6-10 Afternoon - Electronics Pirates Treasure Hunt: Pirates have jumped the old galleon and boarded the Technology Queen, flying the black flag of the GPS (Grubbiest Pirates of Suburbia). With your family or your group, cruise the dryland Ocean Pattison to find the ten pots of gold with only an eTrex GPS unit (provided) to guide you along this GPS 101 voyage. Please register your pirate band since there are a limited number of GPS units available. Park Office: 715-399-3111.
Evening: Wild Talking Birds: They talk our language, and that helps us to identify them. “Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody!” This presentation ties together the bird’s image with its call and its English translation.

Learn about the hot topic of lava flows, the chilling accounts of glacial activity and the abrasive nature of weathering. Step into an exploratory copper mine. View breath-taking, powerful plunges of root-beer-colored water.

6-12 Native American Flute Player: Michael Charette is a member of the Red Cliff band of Lake Superior Indians. He also goes by the name Baapi Waagoosh, meaning "Laughing Fox" in the Anishinaabe Language. As both artist and musician, he has played the native flute for the past 8 years, often on instruments he has made himself. In all of his work, he uses the traditional wisdom of the Anishinaabe people in the most respectful of ways.

6-13 Unstrung String Band, starring Bob and Louisa Fabbro, playing a mix of traditional Appalachian Old Time, French Canadian and Celtic fiddle tunes. This is some of the music enjoyed by many of our early settlers to this Arrowhead Region (Lake Superior).

6-14 Mysterious Loons: Spine-tingling calls in the middle of the night and the wee hours of the morning. Loons, the black and white ghost of the waters of northern Wisconsin. Learn about the unique calls, bones and take-offs of these majestic birds. Discover how they nest and care for their young.

6-16 Edmund Fitzgerald: The Legend Lives - Thomas Holden - As we recall the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the TITANIC, probably the world's most famous shipwreck, we can look back at Lake Superior's most famous wreck, the 1975 loss of the EDMUND FITZGERALD. Bring your questions and theories on the loss.

6-17 Meet Mrs. Martin Pattison: In authentic period costume, Rachael E. Martin portrays Grace Pattison, wife of lumber baron and Superior Mayor Martin Pattison. Discover how the Pattisons came to move to Superior. See photos of their home, Fairlawn Mansion, and hear about the Pattison children.

6-18 Price Is Right Astronomy: Divide into teams, start out some virtual cash, and choose a door with your team’s answer. Which planet has a Big Red Spot? What’s the real name of our present North Star? Does your team have the answers?!

6-19 Horns of Wisconsin: Bump heads with the horned mammals of Wisconsin! A hard look at the white-tailed deer, elk and moose in Wisconsin. Discover where you might see these mighty beasts of the green-gilded forests in our state.

6-20 Sweet Buzzing: Step into the busy world of the bees. Find out what all that bee activity is about – those bees at the hive entrance that just buzz their wings, the bees that take care of the nursery, the bees that do odd little dances. Explore the honey-making factory. (Ingrid Johnson)

6-22 Here Kitty!: Snarl with the wild cats of Douglas County cougars and bobcats and the Canadian lynx! No catnaps during this presentation as we deal with the habits and habitats of Wisconsin wild cats. A purr-ty picture of the life cycle and diet of these untamed felines.

6-23 Afternoon - Aliens of Interfalls Lake: Wet and wild! Grab a net and see what creatures you can find. Dump your catches in the buckets so everyone can see them. Use magnifying glasses to see the REAL aliens – creepy wigglies, whirling prickle balls, living slimes from the deep! Meet at the waterfront.
Evening - Wildlife Bingo: Crack those bingo knuckles, limber up that grey matter, and see who gets five in a row first! Tidbits of information about wildlife spice up this bingo game!

6-24 Green Bully Invasion: Here come the aliens, crowding out the local natives. What was often thought of as wonderful friends of mankind have turned out to be a pandemic of intrusion. Invasive species have leaped out of flower beds, family gardens and decorative landscapes to take up residence in the wild.

6-28 Fire-Breathing Foresters – Dale Rochon - a short program covering Wisconsin's forest fire suppression and fire prevention programs. After the presentation, interested folks will have the opportunity to view our forest fire-fighting equipment consisting of a 4- wheel drive brush truck and a fire control heavy unit. A hands on "flame display" will be set up where participants can spray water from back cans at the fire targets.

8-1 Exciting Stories from a Fisherman! - Stephen Dahl is a local commercial fisherman who has fished in Alaska and, for the last 27 years, the North Shore of Lake Superior. His earlier years include work in North Norway, a year of study in Denmark and graduate work in Scandinavian literature and languages at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of the current selling book, Knife Island: Circling a Year in a Herring Skiff.

8-2 The Storm that Built the Lights: MATAAFA Storm of 1905 - Thomas Holden: Lighthouses from Duluth-Superior to Split Rock and Isle Royale owe their existence to the devastation caused to shipping in a single November storm in 1905 which involved at least 29 ships in accidents ranging from topside damage to total loss disappearance.
