On August 24 and 25, Superior’s Barker’s Island will be transformed into a small city where thousands of people from the mid-western United States and central Canada join in community, camaraderie and competition.  

The total number of registered teams currently stands at 102 including the Beer’d Dragons, Legends in Our Own Minds, McGladrey Certified Paddling Accountants, Blazing Paddles, the Holy Rowers and We Thought This Was Bowling.   

There’s a little dragon boater in each of us.  Imagine the sun beating on your face as you listen to the lapping of the waves of the sleek boat in which you sit. The smell of the water and sweat combine with racing of your heart to begin the adrenaline rush that is about to take place.  Bang!  A gun is fired into the air and your eyes open as you simultaneously thrust your paddle into the water.  The drummer pounds a beat for you and the nineteen other paddlers to follow as your multicolored boat glides toward the finish line four hundred meters away.  While your mind is telling you that you are only in the recreational division race, the competition has overcome your senses.  Your eyes are focused on the destination ahead, completely ignoring the other teams to each side of your boat and the surrounding bay.  You can barely contain yourself as you glide past the markers that designate the finish.

Don’t be surprised if your adrenalin starts pumping and you’ll be shouting encouragement to the paddlers, and maybe, just maybe, you might be considering pulling a team together and coming back for next year’s races! 

So join us for a weekend of racing, live music and dancing, fantastic food, hay rides, children’s crafts and entertainment, and the awards ceremony.
