United Presbyterian Church
I n
September of 1855, the first church bell was
brought to the head of Lake Superior. The
531-pound composition steel bell was a little
ahead of time as no church had yet been
organized and the bell lay unrung for several
months. In March of 1856, a platform and frame
were erected, and a dedication of the bell was
held by the two existing Presbyterian churches.
Since moving into its new church at 229 North 28th
Street, Superior, the United Presbyterian Church
congregation has been without a bell tower.
Eagle Scout Ian McCumber chose for his project a
small garden and a place to set the church
bell. The project became bigger than he had
anticipated, and with the help of family, church
members, Nels Ojard from Krech & Ojard, Bob
Cragin of Cragin Machine Shop, Jack Finstad and
Roger and Charlie from Twin Ports Concrete, a
bell tower was erected. The Chamber Ambassadors
and members of the congregation participated in
the recent rededication of the 152
year-old-bell.

PARADES
The

for the teacher". For their efforts, the
Ambassadors received a $150 check.
The Ambassadors also participated in this year's
Superior Fourth of July Parade and the Hayward

and SUV-sized Musky garnered second place in the
