Government

The Douglas County legislative body is the County Board of Supervisors. Members are elected to two-year terms. There are 21 supervisory districts, with one supervisor representing each district, and a chairperson elected by the board. The County Board holds regular meetings on the third Thursday of each month.

The City of Superior holds nonpartisan elections every April. The Mayor is elected to a four-year term, and supervises over Council meetings. Representing specific districts of the City are ten Councilors who are elected every two years. The common Council serves as the legislative branch of the City’s government and meets the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month.

The mission of the Superior Fire Department is to provide those services necessary for the protection of life and property. The Fire Department provides emergency response to fires, release of hazardous materials, life threatening medical emergencies, life rescue and potential property loss. They also provide prevention services through educational programs, code enforcement, building inspection, arson investigation and other community based services.

The Superior Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Department provide police and emergency services. They are responsive to community priorities and strive to provide a safe and secure environment in which to live. The city police force includes 34 officers and 2 community service officers, seven sergeants and one captain. The County Sheriff’s Department has 29 certifiedlaw enforcement officers.

The City of Superior’s public library and its branch, the Joan Salmen Memorial Library in Solon Springs, provide quality materials and services, which fulfill the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of the citizens of Superior and Douglas County.
