    Job Description

    Position Description and Board Expectations: 

    The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Superior-Douglas County YMCA is hired by and reports directly to the Board of Directors. This is an outstanding opportunity for an accomplished visionary with a distinguished track record in operational excellence, team leadership, and fund development. Our thriving and growing YMCA located in Superior, Wisconsin is excited to onboard their next CEO who will lead our efforts to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. As an independent YMCA that includes a camp, we have a solid foundation for our next CEO to build upon. Our communities believe in and support the Y’s mission. Come lead our team and partner with our communities to grow the Superior-Douglas County YMCA while addressing the most pressing issues of our time. 


    The Successful Candidate Will Achieve Excellence in the Following Areas:
    •  Lead execution of our strategic plan
    •  Ensure growth and recovery through strong fiscal management
    •  Build and lead the staff team
    •  Position the Y as a vital partner for community change

    Lead Execution of our Strategic Plan: Work effectively with volunteers, community leaders, and key staff, to execute on the existing strategic plan that addresses the needs of the communities served by the Y in a post-pandemic world. Lead, inspire and mobilize staff, volunteers, and community partners to create a vision that strengthens community for all as you refresh the plan in the future. Ensure the strategic plan supports and strengthens master facility plan for both the membership facility and camp. 

    Position the Y as a Vital Partner for Community Change: Serve as an ambassador for the mission, purpose, and vision for the YMCA within the community. Possess the ability to develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, while always upholding the highest standards and values of the Y. Ensure that our Y is seen as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community by connecting all people to their potential, purpose, and to each other. Create a welcoming, equitable, affirming, genuine, hopeful, and nurturing environment and ensure access for all as we expand our reach in the community by leveraging partnerships and collaborations. 

    Build and Lead Staff: Ensure a talent development system is in place to hire, motivate, nurture, and retain a strong staff team. Work towards recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting staff that represent the diversity of the communities we serve. Encourage the team by creating a spirit of camaraderie, inclusion, and sense of mission and purpose. Create a learning organization to help staff achieve their highest potential.

    Ensure Growth and Recovery through Strong Fiscal Management: Use high-level financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders to lead their departments to successful financial operation. Quickly address financial issues that may arise, forecast future needs, and manage and direct the Y’s operations to ensure recovery and revitalization post-pandemic. 

    Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with experience with a range of $80,000 - $100,000.

    Benefits: Benefits include participation in the YMCA Retirement Fund (10% Y paid, 2% employee paid). Employee health insurance provided (including vision), with 75% of premium paid by Y. The Y will pay for 50% of family coverage. Dental insurance is separate – 100% paid by employee. Basic Life insurance/AD&D/LTD paid by Y. Surface or laptop provided by the YMCA, free family membership, 20% family program discounts, most programs free to staff.

    Minimum Criteria for Candidates:  

    1. Fiscally sound business management approach and a proven track record of budgetary oversight and fiscal management of at least $1M annually.
    2. Minimum of five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees. 
    3. Experience developing new programs and reviewing and enhancing programs being offered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement in the communities we serve.
    4. Experience in providing leadership to strategic planning. 
    5. Proven ability to attract, retain, lead, and motivate quality staff and volunteer leadership. 
    6. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission. 

    Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

    1. Current YMCA Organizational Leader certification.  Candidates without the certification will have three (3) years to complete certification requirements after hire if hired before December 31, 2021. 
    2. Experience fundraising including providing leadership to annual campaigns and securing and managing grants. 
    3. Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred.
    4. A successful track record in developing, fostering, and strengthening community relationships by leading efforts to create new alliances, partnerships, and collaboration with other organizations to help the Y achieve its mission. 
    5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
