    Job Description
    The City of Superior is currently hiring Seasonal Laborers in the Street Division and Environmental Services Division (Wastewater Treatment Plant).

    Applications will be reviewed as received and positions may be filled before the deadline date.

    HOURS:  7:00 am - 3:00 pm; 40 hours/week; Monday-Friday or as needed otherwise Season typically runs from March/April - October/November based on assignment, weather and budget.

    HOURLY WAGE:  $16.37 - $18.41

    Some work may be offered at $18.41 if employee possesses valid Class B Commercial drivers license and performs work at that level.

    DEFINITION:

    Under supervision, performs a variety of tasks in the cleaning, maintenance and repair of city facilities to provide for variations in the seasonal work load needs of the Public Works Department and Wastewater Treatment Divisions only; does related work as required.  The Seasonal Laborer works on tasks that do not require operation of light or medium equipment.  The Seasonal Laborer - Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is a rate established for seasonal workers when they are operating light, medium or heavy equipment.  Employees in seasonal laborer assignments are temporary employees and are not assigned to a shift and their work day and work week may vary based on operational needs of the department.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

    Employees in this class work in a seasonal capacity and under supervision perform a variety of tasks in maintaining and repairing city facilities and equipment.  Work activities include one or several of the following:  cleaning and maintaining facilities and equipment, , lawn maintenance,  general clean-up, handling recycling materials, assist in the dispersal and repair of garbage receptacles.  The Seasonal Laborer differs from the Seasonal Laborer - CDL in that employees are hired at the Seasonal Laborer level and if assigned to operate equipment they receive the Seasonal Laborer-CDL wage rate for the hours worked in the operation of equipment.  Certain assignments may only be staffed at the Seasonal Laborer level and employees hired for these assignments do not require a commercial drivers license.

    Employment Standards:

    Knowledges: Working knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety precautions for performing laborer tasks; Some knowledge of general maintenance, construction, tools and equipment.  
    Ability to: Use and care for tools and equipment used in the general maintenance, construction and repair work; Understand and follow oral and written instruction; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public; Keep records for billing purposes; Work under adverse weather conditions; Safety lift 60 pounds from ground level to overhead level; Perform the physical requirements of the position.

    Seasonal Laborer - Street Division
    • Maintains and cleans, grounds, facilities and equipment.
    • Assists in recycling activities.
    • Collects and disposes windblown material.
    • Assists in the dispersal and repair of garbage receptacles.
    • Constructs and maintains fences.
    • Erects and Maintains erosion control devices.
    • Assists in demolition activities.
    • Assists in blacktop, patching and paving.
    • Drives a tandem axle dump truck when required, if license allows.
    • Operates a wide range of hand power tools when necessary.
    • Fuels & Inspects equipment.
    • Assists in painting operations.
    • Sets up necessary traffic control measures while working in the R.O.W.
    • Assists in erecting of street signs.
    • Works in adverse weather when required.
    • Catalogs sign inventory.
     Environmental Services Division - Collections  
    • Maintains and cleans facility and equipment.
    • Assists Engineering Technicians as required.
    • Assists in steaming of culverts and drains.
    • Assists in the operation of jetting and vactoring equipment.
    • Transports equipment, construction supplies and demolition materials.
    • Assists construction crews in the repair and rehabilitation of catch basins and manholes.
    • Assists construction crews in repairing cave-ins.
    • Operates jackhammer.
    • Completes daily logs, work orders and related records.
    • Assists with confined entry operations. Must have ability to enter confined spaces after proper training.
    All assignments:
    • Performs related duties as assigned. 
    • Perform all work in a safe manner utilizing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
    Knowlege:

    Requirements/Special Requirements:

    Any combination of training and experience which meets the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to qualify for this position would be through high school graduation or GED certification and six months of experience performing laboring tasks.

    Driver License:  Must possess valid drivers license or be able to provide transportation as necessary. 
    Drug Test:  Must pass post-offer drug screen.  Subject to random testing with CDL.
