91.3 FM KUWS to host free showing of documentary ‘The Girls in the Band’
In recognition of Women’s History Month in March, 91.3 FM KUWS will host a showing of the documentary “The Girls in the Band” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in Erlenbach Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the community.
The 88-minute documentary, produced and directed by Judy Chaykin, includes historical footage of all-women bands and interviews with the artists. The film also includes commentary from current women performers in modern jazz.
This story of female jazz instrumentalists, band leaders, composers and arrangers highlight their groundbreaking journeys from the late 1930s to the present. These women endured sexism, racism and diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them.
