Duluth International Airport to Receive New Advanced Imaging Technology Screener at TSA Checkpoint

DULUTH, MN—The Duluth International Airport (DLH) is pleased to announce that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has installed an Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) scanner at the airport’s checkpoint to enhance security of passengers flying out of DLH.

The arrival of the AIT will decrease the amount of wait time in the TSA checkpoint and give passengers an alternate screening option.  Being screened using the AIT is optional and those who wish to opt out will receive alternate screening at the checkpoint, including a thorough pat down.  Those who might be the most interested in using the AIT are passengers with joint replacements or other medical devices that would regularly alarm a walk through metal detector as they will not alarm the AIT.

The AIT is safe and meets national health and safety standards.  This technology uses non ionizing radio-frequency energy in the millimeter spectrum with no known adverse health effects.  It does not use X-ray technology.  The TSA has strict privacy standards when using advanced imaging technology to protect your privacy.  The AIT uses automated target recognition software that eliminates passenger-specific images and instead auto-detects potential threats by indicating their location on a generic outline of a person.  The generic outline is identical for all passengers.

TSA officers are currently undergoing training on how to properly use the new technology.  It is expected to have the AIT in full operation effective on Tuesday, May
30th for our travelers.  The AIT will become our primary screener but the existing walk through metal detector will still be available for use in over-flow situations.  Further information on the AITS’s can be found on the TSA website at http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/advanced-imaging-technology.

“The new AIT scanner will add an additional customer service convenience to an already expedited process at DLH.  On average our current wait time in our screening area is 7 minutes.  We are also thrilled that this new technology will also provide a more convenient process for those that are traveling with joint replacements or other medical devices,” said
Natalie Peterson, Communications and Marketing Director at the Duluth Airport.
