Duluth International Airport Runway Construction Update

DULUTH, MN— Reconstruction of the main runway 9/27 atDuluth International Airport began Monday, July 31, 2017. This phase included complete reconstruction of 8000’ for the first time in 60 years. It was expected that the reconstruction project would be completed by the beginning of November. Due to the earlier than expected heavy snow fall followed by the cold temperatures, the completion date for the project was delayed. The concrete work is complete and crews are working hard to complete some of the final items. Runway 9/27 will reopen on Thursday, November 23rd. Once, the runway is reopened, the airport advises to expect some intermittent periods of closure to complete the remaining items and for any severe weather that may occur. During the periods that runway 9/27 is closed, the crosswind runway will be used as it was during the complete closure for reconstruction of 9/27. Every effort will be made to schedule shorter construction related work when it will be the least disruptive to normal operations.

While the crosswind runway was in use, during the complete closure of 9/27, some flights experienced delays and cancellations due to the weather and the shorter runway length with limited landing navigational aids. The airport wants passengers to know that we may continue to see some delays and cancellations due to certain weather conditions during the intermittent periods of closure of runway 9/27. As always, we recommend during your travels that you check your flight status and weather to be able to plan as best as you can.

“We recognize that this situation has impacted some of our flights and passengers. We apologize for this and will continue to work with our contractors to limit construction disruptions as we finish remaining work items. We thank our travelers for their support and patience during this time and would like to thank the agents and ground crew for working hard to accommodate our passengers travel needs during any flight interruptions caused from the inclement weather during the runway reconstruction,” said Natalie Peterson, Communications and Marketing Director at the Duluth Airport. “We will continue to go above and beyond to exceed your expectations as best as we can during this time.”

For the upcoming holiday travel, the airport will be offering our passengers 50% off their parking for any traveler returning and exiting our parking lot from Wednesday, November 22nd through Sunday, November 26th at midnight. To receive the 50% off discount, passengers must exit through the cashier lane.
