  • US 2/Belknap Street Improvements Scheduled to Begin March 19, 2018

    US 2/Belknap Street improvements in Superior scheduled to begin next week.
    Motorists can expect single lane closures.


    On March 19, 2018, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is scheduled to begin the second half of the improvement project on Belknap Street (US 2) in the City of Superior, Douglas County.  Work completed in 2017 included the west and east ends of the project from Banks Avenue to John Avenue and Birch Avenue to Hill Avenue respectively.  The center section from John Avenue to Birch Avenue will be reconstructed in 2018.

    Proposed improvements include grading, concrete pavement, HMA pavement, concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, pavement marking, sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, traffic signals, street lighting, signing, and landscaping.

    Chippewa Concrete is the prime contractor for the $23 million project.  This project is funded with a mix of federal, state, city and Superior Water, Light and Power dollars.

    Proposed traffic impacts
    Construction is scheduled to begin on March 19, 2018.

    During construction, Belknap Street (US 2) will remain open to traffic.  Motorists can expect to encounter delays and single lane closures throughout the project.  Trucks will be detoured around the project utilizing the City of Superior Truck Route.  There will also be a signed Alternate Route available to bypass the project.

    Business access and pedestrian routes will be maintained throughout construction.

    Construction is currently scheduled for completion in October 2018.
