  • UW-Superior conducting week of events in remembrance of Veterans Day

    The University of Wisconsin-Superior will be holding several events throughout the Veterans Day week in honor of those who are serving or who have served our country.
    Free Fitness Week for Veterans
    Nov. 11 to 15 in the Marcovich Wellness Center
    Offered by the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) and Campus Recreation, all veterans have full, free access to the MWC during regular hours of operation for free. Military veterans must present military identification. Each person must sign a day pass waiver for each day that they participate. Veterans are able to participate in any open rec activity including the weight room, fitness center, racquetball courts, fieldhouse, three-court gymnasium, dance studio, climbing wall, table tennis or pool.
    Veterans Day Ceremony and 7th Annual Excellence in Service Awards
    Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
    The event will begin with the presentation of colors, national anthem and Native American Honor song. UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter will give a welcome address, followed by guest speaker, UW-Superior veteran alumni Dave Van Landschoot, and the presentation of Excellence in Service Awards.
    Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes
    Nov. 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
    Students, faculty, staff and community members will have the opportunity to write and send letters to military personnel stationed abroad for no charge.
    John Kriesel – Still Standing. Still Smiling
    Nov. 12, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room
    In 2006, John Kriesel was nearly killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Rushed to a field hospital and struggling to remain alive, Kriesel survived through four hospitals, 35 surgeries and months of recovery. He lost both legs and suffered numerous additional injuries, yet it was the loss of two close friends that hurt the most. Now a motivational speaker, Kriesel will share his story and lessons learned from overcoming extreme tragedy.
    Ask a Veteran Q-and-A Forum
    Nov. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
     
    UW-Superior has a growing population of students who are military veterans from all branches and affiliations. At this event, students, faculty, staff and community members will have a chance to talk to student veterans about their military experiences both at home and overseas and to promote a friendlier campus community.
    Green Zone Training
    Nov. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. in the William “Pope” Wright Jr. Student Center (Old Main Room 232)
    This in-person training for faculty, staff and students is designed to develop a campus community of support for student veterans and their families. Attendees will gain tools to enhance the overall college experience for student veterans. This session includes a presentation followed by dialogue and dialogue and discussion.
    Warrior Games
    Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Marcovich Wellness Center
    Available for all veterans and active duty in the community, Warrior Games involves series of physical events. The winning team will receive a trophy and bragging rights.
