The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host its Band and Percussion Ensemble Concert on Thursday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

“This will be a joint concert featuring both the Symphonic Band under the direction of Steven Siegel and the Percussion Ensemble under my direction,” said Brett Jones, professor of percussion and chair of the Music Department at UW-Superior. “It will be the first time that the percussion ensemble has performed live since December of 2019.”

The percussion ensemble will perform adaptations of music by Bela Fleck and the Dirt Band as well as works by Mark Ford and Michael Udow. Instruments will include mallet percussion, drum set, bass, drumheads, triangles and more.

The Symphonic Band will begin their portion of the concert with a lively opener titled “Ruckus” by Randall Standridge followed by a world premiere of a newly composed work by UW-Superior’s Greg Kehl Moore.
“There will be a wide variety of musical styles as the compositions were influenced by both Western and non-Western cultures,” said Siegel.

After several additional works of contrasting styles, the concert will conclude with two holiday pieces “Ye Merry Fantasy” and a suite from “The Polar Express.”

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for students. Audience members are required to wear masks. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main at 1710 Weeks Ave. in Superior.
