UW-Superior Music Department to host Brazilian percussionist Gilmar Goulart
The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host Brazilian percussionist Gilmar Goulart for its University Recital Series on Tuesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. in UW-Superior’s Webb Recital Hall.
“His main instrument is the marimba and he is known for blending solo marimba playing with interesting staging and drama,” said Brett Jones, professor of percussion and world music at UW-Superior, who will perform with Goulart for two pieces.
As the head of the percussion department at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, Goulart holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado-Boulder with Douglas Walter and has studied with Ian Wright at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester, England as well as with Ney Rosauro in Santa Maria. At the RNCM he became the first marimbist to be awarded the Professional Performance Diploma with Distinction. He also presented the British premiere of David Maslanka’s Concerto for Marimba and Winds, with the RNCM Wind Orchestra.
In 2008 he performed the Brazilian premiere of Erix Ewazen’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings with the São Pedro Theatre Chamber Orchestra in Porto Alegre, under Ernani Aguiar. He has presented many Brazilian premieres and first recordings of composers for percussion such as Christopher Deane, Eric Ewazen, James Ure, Gustavo E. Salas, and Cayenna Ponchione. As a clinician and guest lecturer, he has taught courses and seminars in Brazil and Argentina, and has been invited as a guest member in search committees and Graduate examinations in Brazilian universities.
