UW-Superior student Sydney Mastey receives Campus Compact fellowship
The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Sydney Mastey is one of 268 students to be named to Campus Compact’s 2018 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
“I was very touched upon hearing I was being nominated for this opportunity,” said Mastey, a Legal Studies major with an Individually Designed minor in Conflict Resolution. “I have really dedicated myself to this community and have put a lot of energy into making a change in the social norms relating to relationship violence while attending UW-Superior. I was very excited when I received the news that I had been officially selected, but I know that I wouldn't been given this incredible opportunity without the support and dedication of my amazing professors and community professionals that took me on and allowed me to learn from them and grow through the work I have been able to do.”
Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.
“We are so please that Sydney Mastey is representing UW-Superior with this national distinction as a Campus Compact fellow,” said Jenice Meyer, Director of the Center for Community Engaged Learning, Academic Planner and Accreditation Liaison Officer. “Sydney has already begun applying the skills and experiences of a civic-minded professional, which core to the mission of UW-Superior as an individual who excels in critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, caring about the community and communication. Congratulations to Sydney and her family on receiving this recognition – we are proud to call her a Yellowjacket.”
This award will be officially presented to Mastey during the Spring Student Involvement Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 3, at 5 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room.
“I have been exceptionally blessed with the opportunities that I have been given,” said Mastey, from Becker, Minn. “While I account dedication, passion and hard work to my current achievements, I know that I would not be anywhere near where I am now without the love and support of my parents. They have always pushed me and encouraged me to be the best version of myself possible, and I know that my success will always be largely in part to their unconditional love and support. While this is a great accomplishment, it only pushes me to work harder to see what else life has in store for me. I have always dreamed of making a difference with my life, and this opportunity only reinforces this drive as I continue to work for social change and equality within the world I live in.”
The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to apply for exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
