April is Undergraduate Research Month and University of Wisconsin-Superior students will be out and about presenting their research, scholarship and creative projects at events in Wisconsin and beyond.

Eight students will leave Wednesday, April 5, to attend the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Memphis, from April 6 - 8. They will join peers from campuses across the country at the conference, which is sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research.

“Students attending submitted abstracts in the fall and learned in January whether or not they had been selected,” said Julie O’Leary, Director of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity. “UW-Superior has typically had one or two students attend this event, so it is a thrill to have eight students selected this year.”

The following week, UW-Superior will send six students with their projects to Research in the Rotunda in Madison, Wis., on April 12. The state-wide event is held in the Capitol Rotunda and includes projects from all of the UW System campuses. Students will meet with legislators from their home districts, hear from UW System President Ray Cross, and present their work to legislators, state employees, alumni, and members of the public. The event gives campuses a chance to show elected officials and state leaders the type of research that is happening on their campuses and also provides an opportunity to talk about the importance of research and creative activity for students and the impacts it can have in our region.

On April 21, eight students will travel to the UW-System Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity hosted by UW-Stevens Point. This annual event includes students in all disciplines from all UW System campuses.

All of these events give students the opportunity to present work they have been doing over the past year. Some students completed their projects as a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship or McNair project, others may have been a course assignment or by working with a faculty mentor outside of class. Sharing the results is a key part of doing any research, creative, or scholarly work and this is the time of year it happens.

UW-Superior will also hold its own showcase of undergraduate research on Tuesday, April 18, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Swenson Hall. The annual Day of Celebration provides an opportunity for students to share their work with the campus and community. There will be a poster session as well as student readings and performances. The Day of Celebration is free and open to the community. Free parking is available in Lots 2 and 11 on the UW-Superior campus.
