The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Center for Continuing Education will host a two-day workshop to help individuals learn the principles of Nonviolent (Compassionate) Communication and how to apply them in their own lives.
Taking place November 1-2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., “Talk So People Will Listen, Listen so People Will Talk: Cultivating Compassionate Communication” with speech and language therapist Ann Harrington will examine how leading with heartfelt empathy can transform conflict.
For more than 12 years, Harrington has dedicated herself to changing how people talk and listen. As an expert in the practice of Nonviolent Communication, Harrington has worked with many groups and individuals to help build and strengthen interpersonal connections – even in difficult and contentious situations – by changing how they think about themselves and others, and how they communicate.
Harrington describes Nonviolent Communication as “a way of giving and receiving understanding and respect using a set of language skills that can help to resolve conflict and rebuild trust in any relationship, personal or professional.”
She explains that this international model of peaceful communication is based on four components of communication: Observations (free from judgments); Feelings/emotions (rather than thoughts); Needs/Values (rather than preferences); Requests (rather than demands). Participants in this workshop will learn the meaning of each of these components, how to identify them in themselves and others, how to apply them in their lives and practice with their own or suggested scenarios.
For more information and to register, visit uwsuper.edu/CCE and click on Upcoming Events or call 715-394-8191. Participants are encouraged to bring an “empathy buddy” with for half price. The workshop fee is $249 through October 15 and $299 after. To arrange a group rate for three or more from your organization, contact Esther Gieschen at 715-394-8529 or egiesche@uwsuper.edu.
