The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host the 4th annual Running for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9 a.m. The event is hosted by UW-Superior’s Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) and Douglas County Veteran Services.

“It’s been great to see this event grow over the past couple years,” said Monte Stewart, the VNSC Student Services Coordinator. “I think we’ve made some improvements that really enhance the experience for participants. We get new people every year, and I’ve heard their captivating stories. Many people commemorate their heroes by wearing personalized T-shirts at the race. It’s very touching to see how an event like this can really bring together the campus and the community.”

Registration, as well as the start and finish line, will be located at UW-Superior’s Marcovich Wellness Center at 1810 Catlin Ave. Children 12 and younger will be able to participate in a free quarter-mile race at 8:45 a.m.

Until September 23 the registration fee is $25 per person. From September 24 through race day, the cost is $30 per person. The registration fee for UW-Superior students and military veterans is $15. The cost for pre-kindergarten to 12th grade students is $20 per person. Registration received by September 23 guarantees a T-shirt and gift bag. Late registration includes a T-shirt and gift bag until supplies last. Registration is available online at uwsuper.edu/heroes5k and also from 7 to 8:30 a.m. the day of the race.

Prizes and awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall finishers and the top three males and females in several different age categories.

“The course takes you through the campus and heart of UW-Superior,” said Stewart. “We have music playing prior to the race and during the race. I love the fact that we conduct a formal national anthem before the race, too. We also take a moment of silence to recognize the heroes in our lives who may not be here today. It’s a powerful event.”

All proceeds from the run/walk will benefit the Douglas County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund as well as the UW-Superior VNSC. Since it started, the Running for Our Heroes 5K Run/Walk has raised more than $5,000.

The VNSC opened in 2012 to provide programming in support of student success for our veteran and/or nontraditional students. The VNSC serves 35 percent of the undergraduate enrollment each semester including veterans, students with children, current military service members, dependents or spouses of veterans, married students and students 25 years or older. More than 5 percent of UW-Superior’s undergraduates are veteran/military students.

UW-Superior is a national leader in its support for veterans, having been named a Military Friendly® Campus for the seventh year in a row, as well as being named among the Top 25 Military Friendly® Public Schools in the nation.
