The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will hold its Steel Drums concert on Tuesday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

“The steel drum ensemble will expand what it does to feature other percussion music from around the world,” said Dr. Brett Jones, Professor of Percussion and World Music at UW-Superior. “This expansion will create quite a wonderful variety of dance music.”

The concert will feature Caribbean music from Trinidad played on steel drums and hand drumming from Africa and Latin America. The performance will conclude with the debut of a new set of instruments that were donated to UW-Superior. The Korean samul nori drums and gongs will be played for the first time in conjunction with this ensemble.

“A great variety of music that will make you want to tap your foot or dance,” said Jones. “There are few sounds more energetic than steel drum, or powerful than hand drums.”

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and free for students. The Thorpe Langley Auditorium is located in Old Main at 1710 Weeks Ave. in Superior. For questions or additional information, call (715) 394-8115 or email music@uwsuper.edu.
