The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Yellowjacket Athletics has announced its schedule for the third-annual Week of Giving, taking place December 1 - 10.

“As a department we’re very excited to once again be dedicating time in early December to give back to the community,” said Nick Bursik, UW-Superior Athletics Director. “Our student-athletes and staff look forward to this week. All of the different activities during the course of the week let us do something to benefit many different groups that need help during the season.”

Monday, Dec. 3, during the noon hour, Yellowjacket student-athletes will wrap gifts for families that have placed requests on the UW-Superior Giving Tree.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Yellowjacket student-athletes will be at Super One Harbor View in Superior (2202 East 2nd Street) ringing bells for the Salvation Army.

The popular Caroling for Cans food drive is also back for another year. Yellowjacket student-athletes will go door-to-door throughout Superior on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 6:30 until 8 p.m. collecting donations benefiting the food shelf at St. Vincent de Paul.

“Last year was our best year in terms of food donations, and we were able to donate almost 1,000 pounds of food to the food shelf,” said Bursik. “We hope this year will be even better. We’re adjusting the time that we’ll be out caroling to hopefully find more people at home and ultimately collect more donations.”

The Week of Giving will tie into the Yellowjacket Cause Game efforts for the year. Friday, Dec. 7, Yellowjacket Athletics will have staff members volunteering at a pair of events at Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. They’ll be at the “Have a Heart, Help a Neighbor” drive-up food donation from 5 until 9 a.m., and then at the food bank from 10 a.m. until noon.

The women’s hockey game Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. will be the team’s Cause Game, with proceeds from jersey sales and apparel sales going to the food bank. There will also be no admission fee for the game, but those in attendance are encouraged to make a donation at the door.

Yellowjacket Athletics will close out the week by volunteering Sunday, Dec. 9, from 5 until 9 p.m. at Bentleyville in Duluth.

During all Week of Giving home games, Yellowjacket Athletics will be collecting toys to benefit the Superior Fire Department’s Toys for Tots toy drive.

“Superior is like nearly every other community in that there are people with needs. It’s a great community and we’re excited to partner with the citizens of Superior to make a difference for people less fortunate,” said Bursik. “We encourage people to participate in our events so we can all do our part this season.”
