    Event Description:
    Dr Lilian Katz will present recent developments in Early Childhood, status of children on the national agenda, and what children need today.

    This event is free and open to the public.

    Dr. Katz is brought to our area through the collaborative efforts of the following Early Childhood Advocates: Family Forum, Inc.; the Superior School District-4K; University of Wisconsin-Superior; and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.

    Lilian Katz is an international leader in early childhood education and a professor emerita at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she is also director of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education.

    A past president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, she is editor of the first online peer-reviewed early childhood journal, Early Childhood Research & Practice. Professor Katz is author of more than 100 publications, including articles, chapters, and books about early childhood education, teacher education, child development, and parenting.

    For 13 years she wrote a monthly column for parents of three- and four-year-olds for Parents Magazine. Dr. Katz was founding editor of the Early Childhood Research Quarterly and served as editor-in-chief for itsfirst six years. She is currently chair of the editorial board of the International Journal of the Early Years published in the United Kingdom.

    Her most recent book, "Talks with Teachers of Young Children," is a collection of her best known early essays and several recent ones. In 1989 she wrote Engaging Children's Minds: The Project Approach (with S. C. Chard).

    She has lectured in all 50 US states and in 43 countries. She has held visiting posts at universities in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, Israel, the West Indies (Barbados campus), and many parts of the United States.

    Dr. Katz is the recipient of many honors, including two Fulbright Awards (India & New Zealand) and an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Whittier College in California. In 1997 she served as Nehru Professor at the University of Baroda in India.

    Born and raised in England, Professor Katz has a PhD in Child Development from Stanford University. She and her husband, Boris Katz, have three grown children, four grandsons and one granddaughter.
