From 1985 to 2005, Dr John Lange held a sleep out event in mid-December to benefit the homeless of Superior/Douglas County. Braving the freezing temperatures by huddling around barrel fires and trying to sleep in cardboard boxes, the hardy band of volunteers collected donations of clothing, sleeping bags, blankets and money for countless homeless.
In 2007, the event was restarted as ''A Night Without A Home''. The new event was moved to early November to coincide with National Homeless Week and is the kickoff event that launches the Homeless Awareness Week in Superior/ Douglas County. Several other events are also scheduled for that week.
Who are the homeless of Superior/ Douglas County? They are the men who sleep by the train tracks and need to run up and down the tracks in the middle of the night to generate enough body heat so that they can jump back into their sleeping bags and not freeze to death. They are women and children sleeping in cars because they needed to escape an abusive home. They are the middle-aged couple living in a city park who are mentally challenged and who assist a young homeless man who is even more challenged.
A coalition of volunteers will be collecting food, winter clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, gift certificates for lodging, meals, food, haircuts, etc. and money to benefit four agencies who serve the homeless of Superior/Douglas County.
