''A Rural Northern Life'' Art Exhibit

The North Ends Arts Gallery and the Superior Council for the Arts (Formerly North End Arts Council) proudly present Wisconsin artist David Grote's paintings in an art exhibit entitled "A Rural Northern Life".

The exhibit will run from October 19 through November 27, 2009, with an artist reception on October 23 from 5:00 to 7:00PM. 

Quoting the artist's art statement:  "I paint on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, linen, wood panel, and copper.  The painting surface I select often depends on the subject matter being painted and what I wish to communicate to the viewer.  My original oil paintings are created using a layering technique where layers of paint and/or glaze are applied in many layers over the course of days, weeks and even months in the case of larger work.  This gives my paintings a richness  that I like to compare to the complex flavors of fine cuisine making them a true work of art."

Looking at David’s work, it’s easy to see what inspires his oil paintings.  Orchards, berries and gardens flourish in the sandy soils of the 15 acre wooded farm in Northern Wisconsin, where he built his painting studio in a traditional style of a Swedish Falun Red outbuilding. He now works as a full time Artist and Shepherd.

Not only does David  paint his  colorful Icelandic Sheep, he spins their luxuriant dual-coated fleece.  From noon to 4:00 PM on October 23, he will demonstrate spinning lopi style yarn.  The event is free and open to the public.

The North End Arts Gallery is located on the second floor of the historic Trade and Commerce Marketplace at 1323 Broadway, Superior, WI.  The Gallery's hours are 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
