Name: An Evening with Anthony Bukoski
    Date: October 8, 2022
    Time: 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM CDT
    Event Description:
An Evening with Anthony Bukoski Local author Anthony Bukoski will read from his books, including his newly published Blondes of Wisconsin, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the Hanni Strahl Concert Hall, A World of Accordions Museum, 1401 Belknap St. in Superior, WI. His prize-winning wit and wisdom will explore the lives of fictional Polish-Americans in Superior’s East End community. Accordion music will be featured that is relevant to the readings! This is a fund-raiser for A World of Accordions Museum. A native of the East End of Superior, he attended St. Adalbert’s grade school, where he was steeped in the unique culture of his Polish-American port city neighborhood. He joined the Marine Corps in 1964 after a year at what was then the Wisconsin State University Superior and found himself a soldier in Danang, South Vietnam! After three years, Anthony returned to Superior and finished his undergraduate work. After graduation, Anthony continued at Brown University in Rhode Island where he received an MA in English, and The University of Iowa where he attended the Writer’s Workshop in 1976 and received his PhD in English in 1984. He spent the bulk of his career until retirement as a professor of English at The University of Wisconsin-Superior. In addition to his academic teaching and study, Anthony is also a man of broad life experience. He has been a car wash attendant, short order cook, camp counselor and janitor, salvaged bauxite from derailed tank cars, and worked in the complaint department at Sears. His father (an accordion player!) was a laborer in a flour mill and had once been a merchant seaman on the Great Lakes as well as on ocean-going ships. His influence is strongly evident in Anthony’s Polish-American stories. No wonder we see ourselves and our community in his writing and understand the struggle of his protagonists! Dr. Bukoski received the Oskar Haleck Prize from the Polish American Historical Association and is a three-time nominee for the Pushcart Prize in literature. He is featured in the PBS Video A Sense of Place: A Portrait of Three Midwestern Writers.
