The Women's Choir of the College of St. Catherine, in St. Paul, Minn., will perform at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Superior, on Saturday, April 18th at 7:30 pm as part of its spring concert tour. There is no cost for admission, but a free will offering will be collected and given to the choir to help defray the cost of the tour.
The 28–voice choir, under the direction of Patricia Cahalan Connors, is recognized as one of the top women's choirs in the state. They have performed for the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota and the Minnesota Music Education Association conventions, on national and international concert tours and on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.
The choir's program of sacred and secular music from the Renaissance to the present will feature works in a variety of languages and ethnic styles. The work of contemporary women composers will be highlighted, including a brand new arrangement of a South Indian Thillana by Twin Cities-based composer, Jan Gilbert.
Patricia Cahalan Connors is the St. Kate's director of choral activities and chair of the music department. In addition to leading the Women's Choir, she conducts the St. Catherine Choral Society and the Madrigal Singers. She holds a master's degree and a doctorate in choral conducting from Indiana University and the University of Iowa, respectively, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind. Her conducting teachers included Don V. Moses, Julius Herford and Helmuth Rilling. She has served as guest conductor and clinician for choral festivals in Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa and edited several published choral works from the ospedali period of 18th century Italy.
