Lake Superior Day is a special day that encourages people to take an interest in protecting the lake as well as enjoying the many opportunities Lake Superior offers. Every year, communities around the lake in the U.S. and Canada celebrate this day on the 3rd Sunday in July.
Superior’s Lake Superior Day Celebration will take place on July 20 from 1-4:00 p.m. at the Barker’s Island Festival Park. The afternoon celebration will include a Native American drum circle, Barker’s Island clean-up, children’s inflated games (i.e. Moonwalk), free hot dog lunch, live music, free kites and kite flying for youth, free raffle for a compost bin and rain barrel, environmental displays, badminton and other family games, and more.
Lake Superior Day is also sponsoring an essay contest open to any youth in grades K-8. In 200 words or less, youth should explain 1) why Lake Superior is important to me, 2) what I can do to help protect Lake Superior, and 3) what I think my community should do to protect Lake Superior. Entry deadline is July 16. Essay grade divisions are K-3, 4-5, and 6-8th grades and selected writers from each division will receive a $25 Simon mall gift card. Selected writers will also have the opportunity to read their essays
at the celebration.
Essays can be sent to Joan Wimme, Douglas County UW-Extension, Courthouse, Room 107, Superior, 54880 or e-mailed to joan.wimme@ces.uwex.edu. Include the name, address, grade, and telephone number of each essay writer so they can be contacted if their essay is chosen.
