Come join the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad, a nonprofit all-volunteer excursion train, celebrate the anniversary of the first train to arrive in Duluth from St. Paul via its very own tracks on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31. Members of the community as well as visitors are invited to come ''ride the original railroad to Duluth.''
The train will run twice a day both Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Adult fare is $10.50, children ages 4 – 12 are $6.50 and children 3 and under ride free. On August 1, 1870, the last spike was driven and the first train – the Lake Superior & Mississippi (LS & M) – left the St. Paul waterfront at 7:15 a.m. and arrived in Duluth at 11:30 p.m. It took over 16 hours to travel the 154 miles going through Jay Cooke Park into Fond du Lac and then along the north bank of the scenic St. Louis River.
