Be Red Cross Ready – Take Action as a Family - Today
Disaster and Emergency Preparedness can feel like a daunting task…that gets put off. In a fun and interactive way, families will learn how taking just a few simple steps can make them much more prepared for disasters and contribute to a more resilient community. Families will work together on the steps they can take today to be more prepared for natural and man-made disasters. The session will also talk about the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and a little known fact that families often miss.
Holiday Mail for Heroes – Thanking a Service Member or Veteran With a Holiday Card
One of the core services of the American Red Cross is their ‘Services to the Armed Forces'. That consists of things like the emergency communications between service members and their families as well as supporting service members and their families before, during and after deployment. A fun part of Service to the Armed Forces work is the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Last year the Red Cross collected, sorted and distributed over 12,000 cards from people in the Northland to Service Members and Veterans in the Northland. Types of places they went to were military units like the 950th Engineering Battalion from Superior, the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, and places like the VA Veteran's Home in Silver Bay and nursing homes around the area. Each Service Member or Veteran gets a bundle of 5 cards wrapped with a ribbon thanking them for their service. A great way to provide a tangible thank you to our Heroes.
