UW-Superior Theatre to hold production of ‘Doctor Faustus’
The University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre will present ‘Doctor Faustus’ in the Manion Theatre on the UW-Superior campus. Performances will take place on Nov. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.
“This is the story of what happens when a man sells his soul to the devil for 24 years of fame and fortune,” said Cathy Fank, Director of University Theatre at UW-Superior. “This show is going to be very visual and aural to support the 15-member cast – many of which play four different roles during the performance.”
The play, written by Christopher Marlowe, explores what happens when Doctor Faustus becomes dissatisfied with his studies of medicine, law, logic and theology and he decides to turn to the dangerous practice of magic. An evil experiment with magical incantations summons Mephistopheles in the form of the devil. The doctor sends Mephistopheles back to hell with the condition that if he is given 24 years of absolute power, he will sell his soul to Lucifer.
“It’s a very challenging play,” said Chris Linder, a junior student at UW-Superior who is playing the role of Doctor Faustus. “There are a lot of moving pieces. It’s a very complex character – a conflicted character of a man in search for the meaning of life who is willing to do anything to find it.”
Tickets for ‘Doctor Faustus’ are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors and non-UW-Superior students; and $2 for UW-Superior students; $6 group rate for 10 or more; and $6 for youth 12 and under.
