During the Great Depression, New Deal programs like the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) accomplished two goals: provide employment opportunities to out-of-work Americans, and complete public works and conservation projects around the United States. Two local state parks, Pattison State Park and Amnicon Falls State Park, owe much of their development to these New Deal programs. Join park ranger Natalie Brown as she discusses the role these programs played in the history and development of these two parks. Free and open to the public.
This event is part of the One Book Northland series, a regional reading program featuring a book selected and voted upon by members of the community. This year's One Book Northland title is the "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown, a story about a rowing team from the University of Washington and their quest for gold at the 1936 Olympic Games. This inspiring account of young men striving for excellence has been called "an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times."
