Brightwater Health Announces Rebranding and Grand Opening to Expand Access to Mental Health Services

Superior, WI – September 17, 2025 - Brightwater Health, formerly known as Human Development Center (HDC), is proud to announce its official rebranding and grand opening celebration. This marks a new chapter in our commitment to providing accessible, compassionate, and community-centered mental health care in the Northland.

We’ve outgrown the name, but not the mission. While the heart of our mission remains unchanged, the name Brightwater captures the optimism, strength, and stability we aim to provide across our communities. This change reflects not only our expanded scope of services but also our commitment to clarity, accessibility, and the holistic wellbeing of those we serve. It evokes renewal, resilience, and transformation — like clean water navigating stones or light shimmering across a lake. It feels rooted in our region while also pointing toward the hope and healing we offer here every day.

    Grand Opening Celebration:
    Date: Wednesday, October 1, 2025
    Time: 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Location: Brightwater Health Downtown Duluth, 120 W 2nd Street, Duluth, MN, 55802

Event Highlights: Ribbon-cutting ceremony with Duluth Chamber of Commerce at 4:00pm, open house tours, meet-and-greet with our care team, social hour with light hors d’ oeuvres and refreshments.

“After many thoughtful conversations, staff input sessions, and reflection, we’re excited to announce the next chapter of our identity to you,” said Benjamin Hatfield, Executive Director of Brightwater Health. “Human Development Center has meant something deep and personal to so many, across many decades.  It carries the weight of our history, the names and faces of those who built this organization, and the lives we’ve helped change along the way.  Letting go of that isn’t easy for us — and it shouldn’t be.  But we’re not leaving it behind — we’re carrying it forward, under a name that reflects both our evolution and our continued enduring purpose. New buildings. A new name. A new strategic plan. New investments in our wellbeing, our future, and our collective impact to the Northland. This name belongs to all of us — and we can’t wait to grow into it, together with you.”

    What’s New:
    ●  A refreshed brand identity that emphasizes hope, healing and forward momentum in mental health and wellness.
    ●  A welcoming new Downtown Duluth space designed for comfort and accessibility.
    ●  Expanded programs and resources.

“Water moves, adapts, nourishes, and sustains – we are, too. Over the coming months, you’ll begin to see this name frequently as we make the shift with care and intention”, Benjamin Hatfield, Executive Director.

    Media & Community Invited
Media representatives and local leaders are encouraged to attend the grand opening event. Interviews with key staff and photo opportunities will be available during the event.
