    December 05, 2018
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank has adopted a more public facing approach to its board recruitment strategy in an effort to broaden its diversity and increase its 10-member board of directors.

As part of this new strategy, the food bank is using public channels, like social media, and its current board to conduct outreach for their volunteer roles.  As Board Chair, Dawn Erickson states, “We’re hoping this new strategy yields a deep pool of board candidates from which to consider.”

As an organization serving eight counties in NE Minnesota (St. Louis, Carlton, Lake and Cook counties) and NW Wisconsin (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron counties), Second Harvest hopes to recruit up to four (4) new board members who will more fully represent its service region and broaden its geographic, age and ethnic diversity.  In particular, candidates are being sought from the following areas:

    • Geography – Individuals from north St. Louis, Lake, Cook, Ashland, and Iron counties
    • Ethnicity – Individuals of color
    • Age – Individuals age 40 and younger

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, like many non-profit organizations, is governed by a volunteer board of directors who focus on visionary and high-level strategy work, leaving operations to organization staff.  As a hunger-relief organization, they also look for board candidates who have a passion for their mission.

Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s board meets six (6) times per year in person, primarily in the Duluth area, and one (1) time per year via teleconference.  A call-in opportunity for board members not near its distribution center in Duluth is offered.

Any and all individuals interested in being considered should complete Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank’s brief questionnaire which can be found on their website: www.northernlakesfoodbank.org/careers.  Deadline for submission is December 15, 2018.

Questionnaires will be reviewed by the board with candidate interviews occurring in late December and early January.  New board members will be nominated for election in January 2019.  Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank board members may serve up to three (3), 3-year terms.
