The University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre Program will present “Crimes of the Heart” in the Experimental Theatre located in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center on the UW-Superior campus. Performances, directed by Liz Larson, will take place on April 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. and April 23 and 30 at 2 p.m.

Written by Beth Henley, “Crimes of the Heart” tells the story of sisters Babe, Meg and Lenny reuniting in their small Mississippi hometown. Through a comedic view, the sister’s dysfunctional upbringing brings about past resentments as each is forced to deal with past de cisions.

“It’s about sisters and their ever-changing relationships of connecting and not connecting with each other,” said Cathy A. Fank, Professor of Theatre at UW-Superior. “It’s about families negotiating difficult family issues, but thru a comic lens.”

Anissa Peppersack, a junior from Cottonwood, Minn., majoring in Theatre with a minor in Art, plays the role of oldest sister Lenny – a character she knows well.

Last year in my Character Analysis class, I did a short scene from “Crimes of the Heart,” said Peppersack. “I sort of fell in love with how frustratingly selfless Lenny’s character was. Doing the research for her character helped me prepare for auditions and land the role.”
Peppersack isn’t the only member of the production with an affinity for “Crimes of the Heart.”

“I know the show well, as I have directed it three times at other theatres,” said Fank. “We currently have some really talented female actors, and it’s a great female show.”
