UW-Superior to host top high school jazz musicians - Fall 2019
The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host many of the best high school jazz musicians from throughout the Northland for the Tri-State Jazz Festival on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
“It’s a really fun event, and it’s not just me saying that,” said Greg Kehl Moore, UW-Superior professor of Jazz Ensembles and Saxophone. “Everyone involved feels the students grow a lot from the experience at the festival and have a lot of fun.”
Originally a part of the Tri-State Band Festival, which will take place Oct. 17 at UW-Superior, the Tri-State Jazz Festival became its own event in 2007, and typically draws more than 30 students from several schools throughout the Northland and Twin Cities area.
Beginning in the morning, students will rehearse with Moore and guest conductor Lennie Foy. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Foy is professor of trumpet at DePauw University. He also serves as artist and faculty at Birch Creek Academy and the Interlochen Arts Camp. Foy has been featured in both jazz and classical performance arts throughout the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Argentina, England, and Russia. His career includes performances with a variety of celebrity artists and an extensive engagement with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Grammy award-winning Nashville Symphony Orchestra. Since 1991 Foy has also been recording and touring internationally with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.
“He’s a terrific person and a wonderful jazz educator,” said Moore. “He’s super talented and the students love him.”
The day will conclude with a public concert at 7 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium. The UW-Superior Jazz Band will open the performance followed by two Tri-State Jazz Festival student bands. Tickets are $5 adults, $3 seniors and free for students.
