- Perform general custodial tasks for the museums including trash and recycling removal, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, changing outdoor signs, maintaining light fixtures, washing windows, and minor construction projects.
- Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies, bathroom paper towels, light bulbs, and other maintenance supplies.
- Maintain and clean kitchen sinks, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, and stove.
- Assist the Museum Manager with training and overseeing part-time staff and volunteers to help with custodial tasks.
- Monitor plumbing and electrical systems and make minor repairs as approved by Museum Director. Make recommendations for large repairs to Museum Director.
- Relocate telephones, computers, and other office equipment.
- Monitor security systems and notify security company of any issues.
- Inspect and monitor fire suppression sprinkler systems and report any issues to contractor and Museum Director. Conduct regular inspections with the Fire Department and communicate any necessary repairs.
- Inspect and monitor HVAC system, report any issues to contract and Museum Director.
- Perform preventative maintenance checks, to include checking and oiling circulation pumps and fans monthly, maintain buildings' sump pump systems, and other schedules as required.
- Work with Director for seasonal opening and closing of sites.
- Monitor museums during the off season. Check boilers, mouse traps, sump pumps, etc.
- Prepare and paint walls, railings, and molding.
- Maintain walkways and ramps at all sites.
- Work with staff, contractors, volunteers, and others at museum sites.
- Set up tables, AV equipment, and chairs (indoors-up to three floors, and outdoors) for programs, rentals, and events.
- Safely move furniture within and between facilities in accordance with City policies related to Historic Properties.
- Assist with construction of new exhibit installations,
- Assist in maintaining storage and artifacts in a neat and clean manner in accordance with City policies related to Historic Properties.
- Take the lead in organizing a move of large furniture.
- Coordinate with lawn and maintenance company for lawn care at all sites. Conduct the maintenance in between regular mowing.
- Maintain flowerbeds, to include weeding, mulching, fertilizing, and watering plants in coordination with the Garden Club.
- Conduct snow removal from walks, pathways, porches, and ramps at all sites. Coordinate with a private company for additional snow removal at all sites as needed. Coordinate with the City crews for snow removal for Fairlawn parking lot.
- Coordinate with lawn and maintenance company for lawn care at all sites. Conduct the maintenance in between regular mowing.
- Make minor repairs to buildings and mechanical equipment, with minor electrical and plumbing repairs, under the supervision of the Museum Director.
- Use and care for tools, equipment, and chemicals necessary to do the work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Understand and apply the Secretary of Interior Standards for the Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction of Historical Properties to research maintenance and rehabilitation guidelines.
- Read and interpret blueprints.
- Read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals being used.
- Set priorities to meet assignment deadlines with minimum supervision.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with staff volunteers, and the public. Work as a team.
- Advise part-time staff and volunteers on project work.
- Maintain records and work within a budget.
- Use computer and software, including email and internet search engines.
Requirements/Special Requirements:
Education & Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience cleaning offices.
- One year of experience with building mechanical equipment operation and maintenance.
- Experience working at a museum, historic site, or comparable setting preferred.
