Position Summary: The mission of Mentor North is “to celebrate youth and support their families through one-on-one mentorship and community engagement.” The Superior Program Advocate provides direct program advocacy to a caseload of matched and unmatched youth and families, in alignment with Mentor North’s values, policies, and best practices. This role also supports program visibility, partnerships, and growth within the Superior community. Organizational Culture: Mentor North’s small team offers a dynamic and engaging organizational culture rooted in collaboration, support, and growth. We recognize the systemic oppressions that negatively impact people of color, women, people from working-class backgrounds, LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, and people with disabilities. Essential functions:
Program Advocacy of Unmatched/Matched Caseload (85%) Provide case management for matched and unmatched youth and their families by maintaining regular contact with youth, parents/guardians, and mentors (typically every 4–6 weeks), offering information, resources, and support; celebrating milestones; troubleshooting challenges; and communicating activities and events. Document all interactions in CiviCore in a timely manner, maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, and approve mentor logs weekly. Conduct family intakes. Actively participate in mentor distribution meetings. Actively participate in case management meetings, reporting on matches, progress, and issues of concern. Support the annual evaluation process and adjust support for youth, mentors, and families based on participant feedback. Contact the parent/guardian of unmatched youth every 6 months and conduct biography updates for unmatched youth. Facilitate positive program exits that provide an opportunity for participants to celebrate accomplishments, share feedback, and process the experience of being part of the program. Program Visibility, Partnerships, and Growth (5%) Participate in community outreach, events, and task forces that increase awareness of Mentor North and strengthen referral and partnership pathways in the Superior community. Assist with targeted mentor recruitment efforts by representing the interests and needs of enrolled youth. General Agency Support and Collaboration (10%): Assist with coordinating and executing Mentor North events for matches and families. Assist with ethical storytelling and sharing impact by providing stories and/or photos shared by mentors, youth and families as needed. Attend staff meetings, team meetings, committee meetings, board meetings and trainings as scheduled/needed. Assist with fundraising events and initiatives, as needed. Other job duties as assigned by the Lead PA or Executive Director.
Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Previous experience working with children, youth and their parents in a developmental setting and prior experience working with diverse populations who may have experienced trauma.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to quickly engage and build trust.
Ability to work with diverse teams and participants to foster a culturally inclusive environment that values people’s identities and multiple dimensions of diversity and experience.
Ability to plan, coordinate and communicate effectively with mentors, families and staff members.
Working knowledge of mentoring, youth development research and best practices.
Experience and comfort using digital platforms for documentation, communication, and project management (e.g., Google Workspace, Trello, databases).
Excellent communication via various channels (phone, in-person, email, text) and critical thinking skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Familiarity with and knowledge of Superior, WI Work Environment Based in Superior and Duluth, with in-office, remote, and community-based work required.
Intermittent travel throughout the Twin Ports area for meetings and events.
Dynamic, fast-paced environment requiring flexibility, adaptability, and frequent collaboration with colleagues and community partners.
Sustained periods of computer-based work, data entry, and phone and digital communication.
Consistent attendance and reliability required to support scheduled activities, events, and meetings.
Physical Requirements:
Occasionally moves, transports, sets up and takes down event supplies and equipment including tables, chairs, large canopy, canopy weights, and displays. Accesses items stored at various heights (using step stools or other safe methods). Sustains attention and communication in varied environments (both quiet and noisy, indoor and outdoor).
