The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department presents its Jazz Band with the Big Time Jazz Orchestra in a special Scholarship Concert on Tuesday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manion Theatre. Proceeds from the concert will go toward a scholarship for an incoming student musician for excellence in Jazz Studies at UW-Superior.

“It will be a variety of big band music,” said Dr. Greg Kehl Moore, Professor of Music and Jazz Program Director at UW-Superior. “There will be some older, more traditional pieces, and some contemporary.”

The 16-piece UW-Superior Jazz Band will perform a piece by Thad Jones and feature many of the band’s soloists throughout the evening.

The Big Time Jazz Orchestra will play an arrangement by John Clayton of a Thelonious Monk song called ‘Evidence.’

“The Big Time Jazz Orchestra has been donating their services to this scholarship since 2002,” said Moore. “We are always very grateful to them for donating their time. It’s the premier local big band in terms of the quality of the musicianship. It’s always a treat to put them in front of our university every spring.”

Tickets, which will be available at the door, are $10. The Manion Theatre is located in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center on the UW-Superior campus.
