The University of Wisconsin-Superior will be holding several events throughout the week in honor of those who are serving or who have served our country.
Free Fitness Week for Veterans
Nov. 6 to 10 in the Marcovich Wellness Center
Offered by the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) and Campus Recreation, all veterans have full, free access to the MWC during regular hours of operation for free. Military veterans must present military identification and they can bring any age of a “plus one” per time they visit. Each person must sign a day pass waiver for each day that they participate. Veterans are able to participate in any open rec activity including the weight room, fitness center, racquetball courts, fieldhouse, three-court gymnasium, dance studio, climbing wall, table tennis or pool.
Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes
Monday, Nov. 6, and Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
Students, faculty, staff and community members will have the opportunity to write and send letters to military personnel stationed abroad for no charge.
Green Zone Training
Tuesday, Nov. 7, from, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning conference room on the second floor of Swenson Hall
This in-person training for faculty, staff and students is designed to develop a campus community of support for student veterans and their families. Attendees will gain tools to enhance the overall college experience for student veterans. This session includes a presentation followed by dialogue and dialogue and discussion.
Ask a Veteran Q-and-A Forum
Wednesday, Nov. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
UW-Superior has a growing population of students who are military veterans from all branches and affiliations. At this event, students, faculty, staff and community members will have a chance to talk to student veterans about their military experiences both at home and overseas and to promote a friendlier campus community.
McNair Veterans Research Presentation
Thursday, Nov. 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium
Adelia Kindstrand, McNair Scholar student, will be presenting the findings of her needs assessment that researched the feasibility of a veterans court in Douglas County. This time is open to come learn about her project and have open dialogue/discussion about the next steps.
Movie showing of Megan Leavey
Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Erlenbach Lecture Hall located on the first floor of Swenson Hall
The true life story of Megan Leavey, a young Marine corporal whose unique discipline and bond with a military combat dog saved many lives during her deployment in Iraq.
Veterans Day Ceremony and 5th Annual Excellence in Service Awards
A presentation of colors, national anthem, national moment of silence and national roll call will take place on Friday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m., at the flagpole across from the Curran-McNeill residence halls. At 11:30 a.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium, UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter will give a welcome address, followed by guest speaker Craig Fellman and the presentation of Excellence in Service Awards.
