Citizens throughout the City of Superior have had to learn to adapt to a variety of changing circumstances over the last several months.  We have adapted our daily lives, our business models, and our means to stay connected to friends and family.

This pandemic has reinstated our community’s need for an affordable, accessible high -speed broadband network.  As Mayor of the City of Superior, I, along with Councilor Tylor Elm, have made it a key priority of the City to build and establish local control of essential broadband network infrastructure.  To ensure the City of Superior is understanding the current network infrastructure and the changes required to support this new broadband network, we need input from our citizens.

The goals of the City for this project include the following:

    1. Lower the cost of internet access by 30% for residents and businesses.
    2. Significantly increase the speed and reliability of internet access.
    3. Increase competition and give residents multiple options for ISPs on-demand in real time.
    4. Build a state-of-the-art network that will improve economic development and foster innovation.
    5. Leverage the network to improve the services provided in the city including public safety, transportation, healthcare, education, emergency communications, and new services that will become possible with advanced network infrastructure.

Reliable internet connectivity is essential in the 21st century.  Residents in our city have been paying too much for mediocre access to the internet.  The Superior Fiber Network seeks to maximize value and lower costs through competition.  This public infrastructure will be open to any service provider that seeks to offer services in the city.  The City has adopted this open model to achieve its goals because the network now touches nearly every part of life in our community.

To achieve our goal of offering this type of network in our community, we need to have higher participation in the Superior Broadband Survey to better understand the current landscape our citizens are facing.  We have set the goal of receiving 800 survey responses to adequately assess our needs.  If you are one of the 361 citizens who have already taken the survey – thank you!  Encourage your family, friends, and neighbors to take the survey as well.

We are inviting the public to take the Superior Broadband Survey 7 simple questions, which takes less than 3 minutes.

Please visit www.connectsuperior.com to learn more and take the survey.
