The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of preliminary design for a proposed improvement to the intersection of WIS 35 (Tower Avenue) & WIS 105 (Central Avenue) / 61st Street. The proposed project begins approximately 400 feet south of WIS 105 (near North 62nd Street), and ends approximately 400 feet north of WIS 105 (near North 60th Street). The project construction is tentatively scheduled for 2020. The purpose of the project is to improve traffic safety and traffic operations of the intersection, and includes signalization of the intersection, construction of median islands, and reconfiguration of lanes. Other improvements included with the project are reconstruction of sidewalk curb ramps in all quadrants, installation of railroad gates and arms, and the addition of two parking spots on WIS 35. Impacts of the project include access modifications due to median construction, driveway relocation, and elimination of parking spots. Construction under traffic is proposed for this project. The roadway width would allow for staged construction, via shifting of lanes and counter-directional traffic while work is performed in the opposite side of the roadway. This procedure would be repeated for the other half of the roadway. No detour routes are proposed, though occasional single night overnight closures are anticipated. Included is a project overview map and a comment sheet. Comments or concerns are requested by WisDOT regarding this improvement project. These comments may include input on traffic issues, unique features of the roadway, pedestrian safety, drainage matters, or knowledge about historic buildings and structures and archaeological sites. Comments are to be reviewed throughout the design phase. In addition, property owners who rent to other parties are asked to notify their renters about this project. The public information meeting will have an open house format with informal discussion. WisDOT staff members and City representatives would provide a project overview and project exhibits.
