The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host an open house and dedication ceremony for the William “Pope” Wright Student Center on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m. in room 232 of Old Main.
At this event, UW-Superior’s Multicultural Center will formally be named for Wright. The professor, artist and mentor to a countless number of students at UW-Superior, passed away July 22, 2015. The ceremony will feature reflections by previous colleagues, students and family members, and an opportunity to visit the recently renovated center.
Wright began teaching at UW-Superior in 1971, and was a member of the campus community for 44 years. He was also the first Black Student Union faculty advisor and Indian Student advisor on campus and the first African-American professor at the university.
In 1983, he was named the director of the Minority Affairs Office, and was known for always finding time for students of all backgrounds and cultures. Wright is survived by his wife Sandra, who was a dedicated educator as well.
Old Main is located at 1710 Weeks Ave. For questions or additional information, call (715) 394-8084 or email oma@uwsuper.edu.
